Ethan Mitchell is a folk musician who calls Ottawa his home. He writes silly little songs to help get things off his chest, and he loves sharing his music with friends, family,
and the occasional stranger. He writes about cowboys, Canada, country folk, city folk, lonesome folk, and friendly folk. He gave up the cello to sing and play guitar, setting stories to
song and every now and again yodelaying a couple hee-hoos.
His songs range from tender love songs, toe tapping shuffles, and Country crooner power ballads, sung in a rich, timeless baritone punctuated by flashy bluegrass runs and intricate fingerpicking guitar.
Ethan is an Ottawa based songwriter, singer, and guitarist. He plays antique and original music inspired by his roots in the Ottawa Valley.
He has a deep curiousity for all things music, and draws upon diverse influences from Hank Williams to Jeff Buckley to Tom Waits and back. Ethan is a keen study of Bluegrass, Folk, and Country from decades as early as the 1920's, and enjoys many modern artists who are revitalizing traditional styles, such as Nick Shoulders and Colter Wall.
A prolific writer, he’s always looking for a way to turn some pithy observation into a proper folk song. He writes about cowboys, Canada, country folk, city folk, lonesome folk, friendly folk, and anything that rouses his imagination. While his guitar playing is steeped in old-time traditions, his writing is rife with aphorisms and little comforts for the modern age. It’s witty and lyrical, often leaning on a dash of sarcasm to drive a point home.
Ethan released his debut album Western Movies March 7th 2025, a collection of new old-timey Country Western songs about finding your way in a world that’s outgrown the myth of the old West.
